If you’ve lost that loving feeling

We often start the life of faith in an easy joyous relationship with God; but soon enough we begin to strive and work to do what makes Him happy. We try and fail, then try even harder, until we’re so weary and discouraged we wonder if we’ll ever get back the loving feeling we once had.

If that’s you, take heart my friend.

D.L. Moody said, “Faith makes all things possible. Love makes all things easy.” Faith makes your life with God possible; but if things no longer feel easy, it’s the love you’re missing. And He wants to help you get it back.

When we’re in love with someone, being with them isn’t a chore, it’s a joy! When we’re passionate about someone, pleasing them isn’t a hardship, it’s a delight! Jesus modeled this for us.

And he who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, because I always do what pleases him.
John 8:29*

How to reignite your passion

If you’ve lost that loving feeling for Christ, here are a few things you can do:

Stop “trying” to be like Him. The root of “trying” is the sin of self-sufficiency. Repent for your self-effort and trust God to do His work in you. Just spend time with Him and you will become like Him.

Reaffirm your devotion.
Go back to the time when you first accepted Christ. Think about all He’s done for you and tell Him once more how much you love Him.

Read His love story in a modern translation.
The Song of Solomon is the beautiful portrayal of the way the bridegroom loves his bride. Try reading it in The Passion Translation (free online) and let God romance you in the deepest part of your heart.

Return to the songs you once loved.
Make a playlist of the songs or hymns that resonated in your heart when you first believed. Sing those songs to Him again.

Talk to God.
Let Him know how you feel. Drop your cares, failures, fears, and discouragement in His lap. Then be silent for a while so He can speak to you.

God stands ready to reignite your passion for Him. You never leave His mind. His love for you burns as hot today as it did on the day when Jesus died for you. Let Him help you fall back in love.
